After having six points deducted and their coaching staff banned for a drone spying on New Zealand training sessions, it has been a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the Canadians and the fact that they have a genuine chance of defending their Olympic gold is astonishing after missing out in the group stages at last year’s 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Germany were also eliminated in the groups last year but their rebuild has also begun and has been impressive with two hammerings sandwiching a game against the USWNT in which they were well off the pace of an extremely strong side. These are two sides that are improving and rebuilding but there is the sense of destiny to Canada’s story so they should get through purely on the basis of that alone.
